The Parker 51 is one of (if not the) most successful fountain pens ever created. It first appeared in about the 1950s and stopped being made in the 1980's but has been revived a few times.
I have had at least 30 different fountain pens and cannot write properly with anything else. The Parker 51 is one of the best ever.
It is smooth, reliable and has a great feel. You will still find great examples for sale on Ebay or in antique markets (there are some sites selling them too).
Most recently I bought one for a present for someone. I found an unused one from the late 1950's that was even better than my own (I almost kept it).
There are lots of nib sizes, colours and finishes to choose from. Normally the body is plastic and the lid is stainless steel, but you will find some in gold (beware they are soft and will mark easily). They are also great for left handed writers too.
Expect to pay between £30 and £80 depending on age and quality.
I own a first year, a 1946, 1948 and a 1944. I much prefer the war years pens. They are wonderful writers and solidly build. They write every time you pick them up and put them to paper --- which is much more than can be said for most fountain pens.
